Automated Control Flow Discovery of Declarative Process Models

The declarative modeling of workflows consists in a constraint-based representation of processes. Constraints describe the rules that every instance of the process should respect: the implicit assumption is that every behaviour is allowed, as far as no constraint is violated. This peculiarity makes declarative models suit highly flexible workflows. In this talk, we will describe the advancements in the development of a statistics-based algorithm for the automated discovery of declarative control flows, named MINERful, and open challenges in this regard. As a case study, we will consider the context of artful processes, i.e., those processes in which the experience, intuition, and knowledge of the actors are the key factors in determining the decision making. They are typically carried out by the “knowledge workers”, i.e., those professors, managers, researchers, etc., involved in the development of intangible but valuable products. Fast, subject to several changes, and adapted to contingencies, such processes are often scarcely formalized or completely unknown a priori. Thereby, we will also explain how we addressed the challenge of discovering artful processes' control flows through the analysis of email collections, reporting the information exchange between knowledge workers.
