Behind the scenes of sport events: conceptualizing the Sport Logistics Framework (SLF) and introducing an emerging research agenda

Purpose: Although logistics management is a crucial part of local and global sports events, there is still no widely accepted definitional framework for the term ‘sports logistics management’. In this article, we aim to close this gap by establishing the key pillars that form a new definitional framework for logistics in sports and sport event management and provide opportunities for future research.
Design/methodology/approach: Based on a systematic literature review of studies featuring logistics management in sports and sport events between 2000 and 2018, we identify key attributes and characteristics of sports logistics management.
Findings: In this study, we reveal that sports logistics management, i.e. logistics activities in sports and sport event management, is a heavily under-researched area that provides a wealth of development opportunities. Based on the three sport event types of local/regional sport events, major sport events and mega sport events, we propose four sports logistics management pillars that are central to the newly designed Sport Logistics Framework (SLF): venue logistics management, sports equipment logistics management, athletes logistics management, and fan and spectator logistics management.
Practical implications: By providing a definitional framework for sports logistics, we set the stage for practical research that can inform sport logistics planning and management.
Originality/value: This is the first research study that features a systematic review of literature specifically focused on the logistics aspect in sports and sport event management, and provides a definitional framework of sports logistics management.
