Beschreibung

With the rise of new economies like the sharing economy we witness a growing number of community-based organizations. These organizations rely heavily on communities within the organizational boundaries as an integral part of doing business, showing fluid boundaries and voluntary membership. This raises the hitherto far too little researched question of how the actions of community members are governed by organizations of the sharing economy. In this study, comparative case studies of 10 community-based organizations in the sharing economy reveal four different configurations of governance mechanisms (pure market, pure clan, market-hierarchy-hybrid, and clan-hierarchy-hybrid) that vary with the main activity of the community (providing resources versus producing jointly) as well as its primary aim (business orientation versus social orientation).
