This presentation will discuss work in progress on a new comprehensive theory of demographic transition spanning three centuries from the early 19th to the late 21st century. It will start with revisiting all major conceptualizations of demographic transition and discuss the main drivers identified in them. Unlike most previous explanations of demographic transition, this new attempt will look beyond the well documented economic and social factors that were associated with mortality and fertility decline. It will go one level deeper by studying the cognitive preconditions for these socio-economic changes as well as the direct impact that changes in cognition based behavior from a more fatalistic and reflexive type of behavior toward one of forward looking rational planning in broad segments of the population on improvements of health and limitation of family size.
