Progressing towards more sustainable forms of consumption and production seems inevitable, i.e. forms that would lower the environmental impact, and direct our socio-economic systems away from inequitable distribution of benefits and costs. The current problematic situation can be ascribed to two misconceptions: the belief in unlimited natural resources and natural sinks that could endlessly absorb environmental pollution, along with the concept of continuous and limitless economic growth. The existing infrastructures and deeply-rooted habits reflect the above misconceptions and add to the challenge of getting out of this lock-in. In other words, consumption and production patterns are deeply situated in the structures we live in, and are intricately interwoven with our daily choices and practices. Thus, changing the status quo is challenging, yet not inconceivable. Within the dominant consumption (i.e. product-purchase, use, and disposal) patterns, consumer decisions relate to the notions of ownership and attachment to possessions. During past few years, sharing behaviours have become more visible through the growth of collaborative economy, i.e. a range of economic models of sharing, swapping, and renting. A torrent of peer-to-peer social networks and real-time technologies lead to the flourishing of various collaborative economy forms, placing the technological developments among crucial collaborative economy drivers, along with growing environmental concerns, higher cost-consciousness, higher unemployment, and the resurgence of community. Contrary to the traditional economic activities, collaborative economy facilitates community ownership, localized production, cooperation, and small scale enterprises. Cooperatives are, thus, naturally inherent to the topic and seen as one of the few adequate legal solutions for collaborative economy enterprises and initiatives.Zeitraum | 6 Nov. 2014 → 8 Nov. 2014 |
