Beschreibung

The discourse on responsible innovation used to mostly revolve around publicly funded projects and research and innovation governance (Scholten and van der Duin 2015). Companies have only recently entered the arena of responsible innovation research. At this point in time, evidence of how responsible innovation can be implemented in a business context is still missing (Lubberink et al. 2017) and there is no systematic way for companies to assess if their innovation practices are in line with the concept of responsible innovation (Stahl et al. 2017).
To develop the necessary capabilities to implement responsible innovation practices, businesses rely on external information and know-how. The aim of the current Horizon 2020 “COMPASS” project is to develop tools to support the implementation of responsible innovation in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). In June 2018, two tools will be ready for pilot testing: 1) An online self-check tool allowing SMEs to explore responsible innovation practices and learn about their current strengths and weaknesses; 2) A method kit enabling companies to develop their own responsible innovation implementation strategy.
COMPASS tools are being developed to enable innovation managers and entrepreneurs to grasp the essence of responsible innovation and provide know-how for its practical implementation in their own companies. Management scholars who deal with questions of corporate responsibility and responsible innovation benefit from a translation of the responsible innovation concept into practices that are viable in a business context.
