As many political developments and decisions have economic implications and vice versa, it has often been argued that economic education needs to be integrated into political education. However, economic education usually does not play an important role in general education in Austria. This paper presentation analyses the findings of an empirical study on various facets of economic literacy of students at the lower secondary level. The results reveal that most students consider business matters important and have positive attitudes towards the current state of the economy. However, many of them lack fundamental economic knowledge and have no idea which (political and economic) decisions are made by the authorities. Since students of that age have to make economic decisions and will soon have the right to vote, their low levels of economic literacy call for action.
