Eurasian landbridge from China via Russia to Central Europe

Although a decline of modal share for rail in international transports-from 58% in 1990 to 40,8 % in 2005 provides evidence for disadvantages of rail services in comparsion to trucking and maritime shipping, the expected liberalization in the sector will lead to large, more aggresiv players in the railroad theater. The joint ventura between Austria, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine which intends to connect Kosice with the Austrian Border (the Vienna basin)providing access to Russia´s broad gauge network has been presented as a case study.
