Foundation is gender-specific: Why do women need start-up support?

The number of women starting businesses around the world is increasing every year. Despite this, women are under-represented in business, especially in start-ups. We see not only a gender gap in start-ups, but also a gender financing gap. Self-employment offers many opportunities to address issues specific to women, such as poverty, reconciliation (compatibility) of family and work, and accumulation of cultural, social and economic capital. These aspects, which lead to more empowerment for women on an individual level, also affect social and societal issues at the same time and thus contribute directly to the innovative development of a country. Based on our previous studies on empowerment via microcredit in Middle Egypt with a focus on women, we compare in a current project specific challenges faced by women founders in Austria. By accompanying a specific program for new female founders, we show why women-specific support in the start-up phase is necessary to ensure the success of one's own business. The results show that the problems faced by women in different parts of the world are similar, but that funding and support measures must be designed in a culturally sensitive way.
