While research on responsible global leadership is growing rapidly, this nascent field yet tends to be inconsistent in conceptual lucidity and definitional agreement. We adopt a perspective according to which we consider the micro, meso, and macro level of analysis and outline a number of antecedents of responsible global leadership. By reviewing various literature streams we establish that responsible global leadership is affected by multiple antecedents which are related to global leaders' ethical decision making, organizational influences like top management team characteristics, as well as the broader institutional and cultural context in which global leaders operate. By using an integrative case study we showcase the relevance of these antecedents and how they shape responsible global leadership. We aim to contribute to the growing body of research on responsible global leadership by stimulating future theory development and empirical testing to take into consideration the numerous antecedents on the micro, meso, and macro level of analysis.
