This paper examines the question of where managers in subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNCs) receive novel knowledge and by doing so addresses the dilemma of approaching individuals who possess novel knowledge while at the same time ensuring they are able to obtain this offered knowledge. We use a network mobilization perspective and arguments on network range, testing our hypotheses on a dataset of 838 ties from 120 managers in subsidiaries leading problem solving projects. We find support for our hypotheses: mobilizing internal, same-function ties across MNC units and external ties are associated with receiving novel knowledge. Our study contributes by resolving the dilemma inherent in receiving novel knowledge, demonstrating the value of a network mobilization perspective, and adding to the problem solving perspective in strategy.
