In this paper we build on the important work of Berrone et al. (2012) who proposed a long-needed direct measurement scale for socioemotional wealth (SEW) in family firms. We take the logical next step by applying standard scale validation procedures for this highly cited but yet not tested SEW scale. We describe the results of a first step in validating the FIBER scale from two studies with different sample characteristics of family firms in a similar context (Austria and Germany) using a total of 356 respondents. Our results show that the scale performs differently dependent on sample characteristics. Based on these insights we propose a more parsimonious version of the scale consisting of nine items that seems to work independently of typical differential characteristics in family firm samples (e.g. generational stage, age and size of the family firm).
