Stirred or Shaken? How does managerialism enter the organizational mix

Beschreibung

Managerialism has emerged as an important subject in research on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). Little is known, however, about the process of managerialization. We will investigate factors which drive the process of managerialization. We look for individual explanation and will reveal very different reasons which explain why CSOs are becoming more and more business-like. Thus our core research question is: How do executives of CSOs explain the process of managerialization?
Our paper contributes to answering this question in four steps. Firstly, we briefly introduce our concept of managerialism and prior research on the mechanisms of managerialization. Secondly, we offer two different theories which provide us with categorizations for our empirical analysis: models of institutional change and attributions theory. Both theories distinguish between internal/external and jolt/creeping causes. Thirdly, we will apply these two dimensions which result in four different directions of attribution for our empirical analysis. We extract explanations from narratives of change. Five matching pairs of Austrian and Irish CSOs will be analyzed to derive subjective attributions of interviewees. Thus we will collect first evidence whether managerialism enters CSOs either in a radical or in a subtle and convergent way. Fourthly and finally, we will discuss our rather ambiguous and heterogienous findings.
