Product modularity has been recognized as a promising way for accelerating product development, increasing a company's ability for mass customization, and mitigating negative product-related environmental effects. While effects of product modularity are well investigated in forward supply chains, research only hesitantly began to analyze its reverse logistics implications. By combining producer and consumer effects of modular products, this study investigates interrelationships between supply chain strategies and product design decisions. Furthermore, it explores how this affects efficient reverse logistics decision making. In order to shed more light on these issues, we formulated two optimization problems; one for a company under a pull and one for a company under a push strategy. In the pull model production decisions are delayed, leading to higher unit production costs. The push model is characterized by lower unit production costs but considers demand uncertainty by assuming a newsvendor-setup.The results of our models highlight the influence of a product's lifetime duration and consumers' attitude towards modular products on optimal product design decisions.
