This presentation examines the dual-use character of AI in reshaping the socio-technical embedding of drug trafficking. Building on analyses of digitally mediated drug markets, I argue that AI operates as both an enabler of innovation and a potential source of harm, entwined with social relations, trust, governance, and regulatory structures. Drawing on my empirical research, I explore how AI extends broader digital transformations in information and communication technologies that reconfigure the organisation, interaction, and governance of illicit drug markets. These shifts challenge existing frameworks for understanding and responding to drug market dynamics and raise urgent questions for policy, regulation, and criminal justice in digital societies.
