Towards a Process Definition of Unlearning: A Review and Response to the Ongoing Discussion

Aktivität: VortragWissenschaftlicher Vortrag (Science-to-Science)

Beschreibung

Organizational unlearning is an influential yet controversial topic. Most recently, scholars responded to serious criticism in two special issues of The Learning Organisation and discussed why and how the idea of unlearning is a valuable concept for the organisational learning and management research. In this talk, I will review the main positions and ‘discuss the ongoing discussion’. Focusing on the individual level and considering contemporary findings from psychology and cognitive science, I will propose that unlearning may be best understood as a process of reducing the influence of old knowledge on cognitive and/or behavioural processes over time. I will further provide an outlook on how this definition could be applied to organizational contexts.
