ABSTRACT
Purpose of this paper
Although nowadays a lot of supply chains are truly globally dispersed, transport costs and
performance still seem to be a rather neglected topic. Therefore, in this contribution we
want to introduce transport chain management as a subordinate coordination function including
all parties involved in a sequence of goods movements from origin to final destination
to show the impact of transport chain costs and performance in such supply chains.
Design/methodology/approach
In this conceptual paper, transport chain performance metrics like mode choice, complex
transport time, reaction time, on-time performance, as well as frequency of loss and damage
are defined forming a total cost of transport chain function which allows to assess their
impact on overall supply chain performance.
Findings
As transport chains performance is crucially important for total supply chain performance
in globally dispersed supply chains, a trade-off between both should be taken into consideration
when comparing them e.g. in terms of total costs. Further, several levers for cost
reduction and performance improvements therein can be identified.
Research limitations/implications (if applicable)
So far it is a conceptual framework, but all measures employed to form the total transport
chain cost function can be rather easy obtained from companies' accounting and performance
measurement systems.
What is original/value of paper
It is a novel approach to take transport-related cost and performance measures explicitly
into consideration when looking on overall supply chain costs and performance.
