Abstract

Of late, both the availability and the quality of digital lexicographic tools (dictionaries, translation apps, etc) have risen rapidly, prompting foreign language learners to adapt their use of such resources. In order to establish which resources are now the most frequently used and which produce the best results, 67 German-speaking students of Business Spanish were asked to translate two texts, one from Spanish into German and one in the other direction, and to record their use of resources in doing so. The data obtained show an increasing use of translation apps at the expense of bilingual dictionaries. They also indicate that app users tend to produce more acceptable translations and to spend less time on producing them. These results have clear implications for the foreign language classroom; teachers must explain how best to use translation apps and adapt learning tasks to this new context.
