Discussion on "Teaching Experimental Design"

We believe that Dr. Donev’s paper raises an important issue that justifies an extensive discussion. This is true because many aspects of Dr. Donev’s paper are relevant for teaching other areas of statistics as well. Therefore, we welcome Dr. Donev’s initiative as an opportunity to reflect on the way statistics is and should be taught. We would like to comment on two points: (i) Dr. Donev’s suggestions concerning the style of teaching a course in design of experiments, and (ii) the role that optimality criteria should play in such a course.
