    Abstract

The cultural unity between nature and intellect seems divided by the different practices in the humanities (ideographic) and the natural sciences (nomothetic). While there can be no disputing the existence of such disciplinary barriers, this article seeks to illustrate and exemplify their common cultural bond by means of the notion of nature and/or the world as a book and the concept of the
picture. It also seeks to illustrate the usefulness of combining philosophical-epistemological and
historical natural sciences constructs using the example of Ernst Mach’s thought experiments.
