Get your shyte together – Wikipedia’s treatment of ‘Brexit’

Publikation: Beitrag in Buch/KonferenzbandBeitrag in Sammelwerk

Abstract

This contribution deals with the English Wikipedia’s treatment of ‘Brexit’ since before the referendum in June 2016 to January 2018, when the Brexit negotiations were fully underway. It focuses on the talk page (TP) that accompanies the Wikipedia article on ‘Brexit’ and the so-called reference desk (RD), which allows Wikipedia users to consult the community for information on any topic.
The Wikipedia TP constitutes an insightful repository of data on what and how private individuals have grappled with Brexit as it provides a globally accessible platform for debate on the matter. The RD complements this with aspects of Brexit that have sparked requests for additional information and information on how the Wikipedia community has addressed these. Therefore, the TP data and RD entries relating to Brexit are examined via a qualitatively oriented corpus-assisted analysis focused on the item ‘brexit’, its co-text and its collocational profile.
This examination has shown that the Wikipedia community’s most heated debates are about the possible effects of Brexit with focus on economic repercussions for the UK. In this context, some Wikipedia editors express critical views concerning the reliability of academic research and expert insights on Brexit – views that challenge Wikipedia policy on reliable sourcing. Finally, the Wikipedia community also discusses causes for the Brexit referendum’s outcome and identifies immigration into the UK as key factor.
