Abstract
Lesbians, or women who primarily have sexual and emotional relationships with other women, face a distinctive set of social, legal, and cultural challenges and stigmas worldwide. With new sources of data about sexual orientation, social scientists have identified features of lesbians' social and economic situation. An overview of this body of research reveals that lesbians generally face economic and social disadvantage, both in the workplace and in organizing their family life. However, an international trend toward greater legal recognition of lesbian families and protections against workplace discrimination suggests that the legal and social context for lesbians will improve.
