N2 - The theory of masculinities has allowed scholars to see and study men not as a homogeneous category holding significant and similar power, but as a heterogeneous group whose members are positioned differently in the hierarchical order, and whose power differs based on additional social characteristics such as race, class, ability or sexual orientation. This entry concentrates on the application of the theory in masculinised organisations and industries, also understood as male-dominated work contexts, with the aim of demonstrating how formal and informal organisational practices, and organisational members may sustain unequal power relations between men and women, and among men. This entry also examines how masculinities intersect with other markers of social inequality leading to experiences of privilege for some, and of disadvantage for women and for men occupying lower positions in the male-hierarchical order.
