    Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to examine the new patterns and volumes of trade flows between Austria and the growing economies of Central and Eastern Europe. The modelling approach is sequential in nature and relies on two types of classic regional science models:

The Fischer-Johansson model of bilateral trade flows that serves to estimate the direction, volume and composition of Austrian trade from and to Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary and Slovenia, referring to a hypothetical successful integration in the long run.

Using these predictions, the second model aims to estimate regional welfare and sectoral production effects within a multiregional computable general equilibrium (CGE) framework for the Austrian economy.
