    Abstract

Although multiregional firms have increased in importance
very strongly in most industrialised countries in the last
decades their impact on regional disparities and on peripheral regions has remained controversial. For Austria regional differences in organisational characteristics of plants and in the employment-structure have been investigated empirically. It has been shown these enterprises esta.h>lish a pronounced division of labour between regions: While in core regions headoffices and the more qualified working force are very highly represented, in less developed regions and in old industrial areas externally controlled branch plants are very important.
Particularly in the less developed regions these plants
consist mainly of routine activities with a high share
    of unskilled workers.
