Abstract
This paper shows that the Italian verb 'indossare' as a term relating to bills of exchange was a loan translation from German 'indossieren'. The channel of transmission was constituted by the law on bills of exchange introduced during the reign of Empress Maria Theresia in the regions dominated by the Habsburg empire.
