Abstract
The article presents a systematic overview of how semantic change came about in the history of Spanish word formation. After a section where genuine semantic change is distinguished from apparent semantic change, the following main mechanisms are identified: irradiation, absorption, paradigmatic realignment, secretion, metaphorical extension, and metonymic switching.
