Abstract

Word-formation has a particularly rich contribution to make to style because of its various dynamics: productivity, relationship within paradigms and patterns, coinage for momentary textual needs, proliferation and lexicalization. Whereas composition and derivation are of polyvalent use (stylistic effects depending largely on the context), some other types, like blends or inflectives, attract more immediate attention. The main stylistic features are: highly connoting elements, neology and formal innovation, rule violation, iconicity and metaphor, change in the status of morphosyntactic motivation. On the text level, formally and/or semantically interrelated complex words serve as a means of cohesion, even of narrative organization; they become part of rhetoric structures, they establish genres and evoke intertextuality. Morphological evolution adapts easily to new settings, imprinting itself on modern language and life style.
