Abstract
Purpose
This paper is about SCM implementation in the organization structure of manufacturing companies and its implications for SCM performance measured along three dimensions, namely technological performance, administrative performance and performance indicators based on the SCOR model.
Design/methodology/approach
Taking a SCM organization typology along organizational properties of formalization, centralization, and hierarchical relationships on company level, an online survey among the 253 largest Austrian manufacturing companies in 2012 led to a remarkable response rate of 16.21%.
Findings
A sample of 41 Top Austrian manufacturing companies show an overall high level of SCM implementation on company level and functional organization types are predominantly used to anchor SCM departments in the companies' organizational structure - this result is reinforced taking ANOVA to show implications for SCM performance along these different types of SCM organization typology.
Practical implications (if applicable)
A strong indication of appropriate organization types for efficient and effective SCM implementation into organizational structure of Austrian manufacturing companies is evident. However, individual adjustments of organizational structure considering company-specific SCM designs have always to be taken into account.
Original/value
The survey adds useful empirical insights about present status of SCM implementation in manufacturing companies and its implications for SCM performance in the case of Austria.
