Abstract

Foreword Being part of a truly global economy, maritime companies are facing an increasingly complex business environment which requires them to cope with old as well as new challenges. Project Denmarks Maritime Cluster aims to cope with these challenges by its focus on competence development and bringing together important actors in the Danish maritime industry as well as universities and other educational institutions. This case collection is one result of this effort. The role of Copenhagen Business School and what now is called CBS Maritime (www.cbs.dk/en/knowledge-society/business-insociety/cbs-maritime) has firstly been to do a desk research project on international maritime clusters that the Danish cluster can compare with. Although the conclusion of the report was that every maritime cluster has its unique historic and institutional background, it gave among other things insights into how maritime education is established in countries the Danish maritime industry often compares itself to. The benchmarking research is reported in Competences in the Danish Maritime Cluster: A Benchmarking Analysis. From this report, there seemed to be room for more business oriented programs in higher education. At CBS we have taken this challenge up by developing a minor in Maritime Business at our master level. The cases in this collection are developed for especially these courses but our hope is that they can and will be used by other programs and thereby give an international audience some insight into what the Danish maritime industry has to offer. It is further our hope that the case collection can be expanded in the future when resources and interest allow. We would like to thank Project Denmarks Maritime Cluster sponsors as well as project leaders and collaborating institutions as well as participating companies for their cooperation and insightful discussions.
