Description

This paper reviews main ideas on technology dynamics and shows how they can be applied to develop a conceptualization of the role of large firms in industrial localization. The relationship between stages in technological development and regions are explored and used to investigate the claim that anchor firms, because of their large-scale and technologically diverse R&D interactions, may be a basis for maintaining local dynamism. The results section uses secondary data on three large UK Bio-Pharma firms to demonstrate the importance for anchoring the stage of the technology development path, sector and technology specifics, and the stage of regional catch-up.
