Description

We argue that the decision maker´s paradoxical cognition creates a disposition for both/and-strategies that lead to an increase in tensions among the organization´s structure, goals, and routines. We suggest that the CEO´s contradictory way of thinking enables organizations to successfully manage strategic paradoxes and increase their performance during phases of moderate tensions. Economic shocks however, create high levels of uncertainty. In this situation, paradoxical strategic actions might spark intense confusion and conflict among the organization members, creating an overload of ambiguity. A situation that might be detrimental to firm performance.
