IB research on CEE: The end of certainties and recognition of blind spots

Activity: Talk or presentationScience to science

Description

Recent developments in global and European politics and economies have the potential to challenge the assumptions underlying the body of knowledge in IB research such as the dominance of a liberal market economy, a continuously integrating European Union and security as a given. Moreover, IB research seems to respond too slowly to phenomena that have gained in importance and have a tremendous impact on business. The question of exiting large markets and dealing with the power shift from business to politics can be called underresearched at the best. In the CEE region, we experience these developments in a specific context. The orientation to the West after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Putin’s war on Ukraine, the strong role of Western FDI in the economic development, the membership in the EU and the rise of populist-nationalist governments have shaped the context for doing business in CEE. It is time to look at the assumptions on which CEE research was built and to turn our attention to neglected areas.
