Inventory routing problem with sustainability considerations - a case study from the petrochemical industry

Activity: Talk or presentationScience to science

Description

Carbon emissions from transport processes contribute to global warming to a large extent, therefore, possible ways of reducing their impact on environmental sustainability must be investigated. One way of doing so is through increased collaboration in a supply chain for example via Vendor-Managed Inventory, which has positive impacts on the efficiency of transportation. We propose an "environmentally extended" Inventory Routing Problem and apply it to a case study from the petrochemical industry. Consequently, we are able to show the benefits of VMI on the economic as well as on the environmental performance of the focal company.
