Description
The project examines the entry of Syrian refugees into the Austrian labor market, comparing the first arrival cohort from 2015-2016 with the current cohort from 2021-2024.The research employs a multimethod approach that includes qualitative interviews and focus groups, as well as quantitative analyses. The data comes from various sources, including the database of the Public Employment Service (AMS) and the labor market database of the Ministry of Labor.
The results show that the recent cohort had an overall better start despite a slower entry into the labor market, with more days worked in the first 18 months after registration. This is attributed to improved institutional frameworks and support from the Syrian community. Nevertheless, refugees face challenges such as protracted displacement, low education levels, and limited job opportunities. Education is identified as crucial for long-term labor market participation and income security, while the low labor force participation of women is highlighted across all cohorts.
