Which startups benefit from corporate accelerator participation?

Activity: Talk or presentationScience to science

Description

Abstract: Research has shown that startups can benefit from participating in seed accelerators. Yet, the effects of corporate accelerator participation are less documented and their identification remains challenging. Clearly, the potential benefits for startups lie in the corporate resources promised to them. We conjecture that startup characteristics influence how much they benefit from those resources. First, given the objectives of corporate accelerators, more mature startups should be better positioned to leverage corporate resources. Second, startups whose managers have corporate experience should be more capable of navigating the corporate environment and thus of accessing and using corporate resources. We test these conjectures with unique proprietary data on startups that were accepted and almost accepted to a corporate accelerator. Results from difference-in-differences analyses are consistent with our predictions.
