Short biography
Bodo B. Schlegelmilch is Emeritus Professor of Global Marketing Strategy at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, Dean Emeritus of the WU Executive Academy and Senior Board Advisor to AMBA & BGA.
He began his career at Deutsche Bank and Procter & Gamble before moving into academia at the Universities of Edinburgh and California, Berkeley. Professorships followed at the University of Wales and the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona. Bodo later became the Founding Dean of the WU Executive Academy, WU’s business school, where he initiated several MBA programs and led the Vienna Global Executive MBA into the 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 Top 50 ranking. He also served as Chair of AMBA & BGA, which accredits business schools in some 80 countries.
Bodo holds Fellowships from the Academy of International Business, the Academy of Marketing Science, and the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He was recognized by the American Marketing Association with both the Significant Contribution to Global Marketing Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Higher Education, appointed to a Bualuang ASEAN Chair Professor by Thammasat University, named Outstanding Marketer of the Year by the Academy of Marketing Science, and ranked among the top 1% globally by citation impact in Business & Management in 2026.
He has taught in 33 countries across six continents and serves on university advisory boards in China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and the UK. His research has appeared in journals such as the 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑐 𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙, 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐵𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠, and the 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝑐𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑆𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒. In addition to around 170 journal articles, he has authored, co-authored, or edited 18 books in English, German, and Chinese.
He served as the first non-US-based Editor-in-Chief of the 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 and on the editorial boards of the 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝐴𝑀𝑆 𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤, and other leading journals.
Educated in Germany, Bodo holds a PhD in Global Marketing Strategy and a DLitt in Corporate Social Responsibility from the University of Manchester, as well as an honorary PhD from Thammasat University in Thailand.
