Roberto Maria Rosati's main research interests concern the design of stochastic local search methods and matheuristics
for solving complex optimization problems, in the domains of scheduling, timetabling and transportation.
Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the WU Vienna University of Economics and Business,
Austria, where he is working on optimization for railway transportation, together with Vera Hemmelmayr and Valentina Cacchiani (University of Bologna).
On 11th March 2024 he was awarded his PhD degree with honors from the University of Udine, Italy,
where he was supervised by Andrea Schaerf. His thesis, reviewed by Thomas Stützle and Mauricio Resende, was among the finalists for the AIRO Young Dissertation Award 2024.
His solution methods have repeatedly improved the results on benchmark instances for well-known combinatorial problems and his solver for Sports Timetabling ranked second in the ITC2021.
He was visiting researcher at the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) in 2021, where he worked with Nysret Musliu,
at the Artificial
Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC), in Barcelona, in 2021-2022, where he worked with Christian Blum
and at the National Economics University, in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2023, where he collaborated with Minh Hoàng Hà. He was Erasmus+ Professor at the Public University of Navarra, in Pamplona, Spain, in 2024, where he was invited by Javier Faulin.
Until 2020, he was consultant and project manager at OverIT (Udine),
dealing with the implementation of scheduling and routing systems for clients in Italy, Spain, Sweden, Brazil and Colombia. He repeatedly visited his clients on-site, interacting in their local languages (Portuguese and Spanish) or in English.
