Description
Biodiversity is at risk of a 6th mass extinction, with global trade displacing environmental impacts far from where consumption occurs. Existing tools to assess trade’s impacts on biodiversity are limited, hampering efforts to mitigate these impacts. BAMBOO addresses this gap by focusing on non-food biomass. In the project, we will develop models to quantify biodiversity impacts using four indicators: species richness, mean species abundance, functional diversity, and ecosystem services. Existing models (LCIMPACT and GLOBIO) will be updated and enhanced with new impact categories for terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. Additionally, we will create a hybrid multiregional input-output (MRIO) model integrating EXIOBASE and FABIO, linking it to our impact assessment methods and the IMAGE model. This framework will allow us to analyze global trade, identify leverage points, and guide strategies to reverse biodiversity loss. Case studies in Peru and Tanzania will refine and validate the models.
