The essence of accounting is the provision of information for decision making. An accounting system is usually the major quantitative information system within a company and has proved to be extremely helpful in assessing the performance of business enterprises. Any deficit in this information is caused not only by a lack in business administration knowledge, but also by poor technical support in gathering and processing the various data sources in a cost-effective way.
The Austrian Hotel and Restaurant Associations, situated within the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce, have realized that Austrian small and medium sized enterprises cannot cope with this information deficit on their own. Therefore they decided to fund a project which allows the hotel and restaurant industry to exchange data on business operations on a global basis in order to benchmark individual performances.
Annually financial information is collected on a confidential basis from approximately 1,000 hotels and restaurants. The data comprises information from the balance sheet, the profit and loss statement and information obtained from an additional questionnaire. The data is provided by interested companies (on a voluntary basis) and by cooperating industry related organizations (Österreichische Hotel- und Tourismusbank and BÜRGES Förderungsbank).
