Description

A practical, accessible 20-page guide for educators and school leadership is being developed to support the prevention of school absenteeism and dropout by fostering resilience at multiple levels—student, leadership, and whole-school resilience—as part of broader school development efforts (Nairz-Wirth/Feldmann, 2024). This concise handbook aims to raise awareness and encourage active engagement in teaching and school culture to strengthen the capacity of students and school communities to overcome challenges and reduce dropout rates. It distills 69 detailed recommendations from a 191-page report into a compact, user-friendly format to enhance practical applicability. The guide includes targeted strategies tailored to different dropout profiles (e.g., ambitious, disoriented, escapist, resigned, status-driven, nonconformist, held back) (Nairz-Wirth et al., 2014, 2025). The ultimate goal is to integrate this resource into the training and professional development of current and future teachers and school leadership, equipping them to build resilient schools and learning environments.
