Coal WB - Coal Mine Mapping

This project aims at producing a global spatially explicit open data set on coal mining, including production time series and mining areas. Currently, no open data sources provide spatial information on coal extraction required for many environmental and socioeconomic studies. We will compile production data from coal mining project reports worldwide. The production data will be linked to sub-national administrative boundaries and extraction sites identified from satellite images in Maus et al. (2020) (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-020-00624-w). We will assess the coverage in terms of quantity at the country level using coal mining accounts from the Global Material Flows Database by the International Resource Panel. The outcomes of this project will be openly available, published under the license Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 4.0).
