The nexus between income and regional mobility in Austria

In this study we want to assess the impact of unemployment on internal migration in Austria. In this regard, we are mainly interested in the influence of closures of larger companies. In order to conduct this analysis, individual data from Statistik Austria are employed. In doing so, we explore migration flows of unemployed individuals based on socio-economic characteristics, their pattern of reemployment and potential income effects compared to the previous job. Moreover, we consider also individuals' pattern of commuting, since it might be an alternative to migration in many cases.
