The study deals with the transformation process in European countries of transition and focuses on the developments within the small and medium sized enterprises sector and the business start-up process. The primary objective is the identification of factors which are perceived as particularly promoting or hindering for start-ups or affect the quality of start-ups in a positive or negative way. The knowledge of these factors enables the conception of intervention strategies which are suitable to remove or at least reduce these obstacles.

The empirical part of the study analyses a sample of 918 (potential) start-ups within the transformation economy of the Czech Republic using descriptive methods on univariate and bivariate levels as well as multivariate methods (Clustering, Configuration analysis).
