This paper describes a longitudinal study examing the mathematical and physical background knowledge of first year students at the Vienna University of Technology. The results show that the mathematical and physical knowledge of first year students has been constantly decreasing since 1982. The unsatisfying results cause doubts concerning the quality of pre-university education and give reason to search for alternative options. Thus, deficits in scientific education should be compensated before the students enter university in order to maintain the necessary pre-qualifications in higher education.
