The Austrian Sustainability Strategy was elaborated in two phases: In spring 2001 a group of experts from Austrian Ministries and Institutions developed the so-called "Greenbook". Following that the Austrian Sustainability Strategy was developed in a broader process in spring 2002. In both phases experts of the IUW carried out the scientific editing and consultation of the project management as well as moderation work. At the same time the IUW did a survey with international experts on the necessary quality criteria for national sustainability strategies which where then used as the basis for the development of criteria, instruments and methods for the evaluation of sustainability strategies. From the scientific point of view the high importance of moderation for the successful integration of ecological, economic and social targets was proved.
