Our project intends to gain theoretical and empirical knowledge on the impact of service-contracting on nonprofit social service providers in Austria. We intend to conduct in-depth research on service contracts, which have recently become the emerging instrument for public funding of nonprofit social services in Austria. Descriptive research on service contracting is quite well developed for other countries. However, conceptual approaches and empirical studies on the impact of service contracts on
nonprofit social services are scarce, especially for Austria. Existing studies on service contracting leave a number of more specific questions open, which will be investigated in this project. Our specific research goals are
    (a) to generate empirical information for Austria on the importance of non-profit-funding based on service contracts
    (b) to unravel the distinguishing characteristics of social service agencies that have placed a service contract with public entities
    (c) to investigate the impact of service contracting on the level and scope of nonprofit social service production.
