Abstract

Until the present day, research from a sociological perspective on the traditional Viennese music - the "Wienerlied" - is few and far between. The present paper aims at filling this gap by analyzing the scene around the "Wienerlied". Following the qualitative research paradigm, observations and qualitative interviews provide the data for the anal-ysis of the structure and the characteristics of this scene. The analysis is based on Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social fields.
The results show, that the scene is structured along two strands that we named "Art-Strand" and "Entertainment-Strand". The differences between these strands are described by means of Bourdieu's three capital sources - cultural, social and economic capital. Furthermore, by employing a two-dimensional model along the axis of the musical orienta-tion and the artistic focus a set of four subscenes is identified and described. These are the "classic", the "nostalgic", the "avant-garde" and the "entertaining" sub-scene. (authors' abstract)
