Abstract

Abstract
Background and Aim: Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is vital to economic growth but contributes significantly to global carbon emissions. Managing carbon emissions as part of SSCM presents major challenges for organisations. This chapter aims to provide guidance on key phases to address these challenges, enabling organisations to implement effective carbon management practices.
Research Design and Methods: Using a qualitative approach, we adopt an integrative review of 29 peer-reviewed publications on carbon management. Relevant literature was identified and selected through a keyword-based search in academic databases. A thematic analysis was applied to extract recurring concepts and patterns. To consolidate the findings, we used a structured synthesis that organizes the results along key process stages of carbon management within SSCM.
Findings: Key findings highlight the importance of aligning external climate requirements with internal policies, selecting appropriate emission calculation methods, and implementing carbon management systems. It identifies strategies for decarbonisation, focusing on selecting a set of measures tailored to different organisational contexts.
Theoretical Contribution: The research contributes to existing theory by providing a conceptual foundation through the structuring and reinterpretation of fragmented literature into a coherent carbon management approach, offering a new perspective on the systematic integration of carbon practices within SSCM.
Contribution to UN SDGs: This chapter contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action) by offering carbon management guidance and SDG 17 (Partnerships) by promoting collaboration in sustainability initiatives.
Practical impact: SSCM stakeholders can use this guidance to set realistic climate targets, calculate emissions, and implement effective decarbonisation strategies.
