Abstract

Attempts to provide some empirical evidence on innovation and technological change in Austria. The data were obtained through interview surveys of senior executives of manufacturing establishments and enterprises in the Austrian metalworking and machinery, electrotechnical and electronic products, textiles and clothing industries. Due to time and resource constraints, the interviews were limited to four Austrian regions only: the core metropolitan area of Vienna, its immediate hinterland, a traditional iron-based industrial region (Upper Styria) and a peripheral region (Wald/Weinviertel) which represent a variety of historic and current economic trends and conditions within the Austrian economy. The paper considers innovation activities in general, and research and development activities, product and process innovations in particular, and relies on a system of input, throughput and output indicators to measure the complex and multivariate nature of the innovation process. Special emphasis is laid upon regional, sectoral, size and organisational status specific differences in innovation behaviour. -from English summary
